Our Mission

The Student Health Center is committed to ensuring easy access to services for all enrolled students at Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology regardless of income level, ability to pay, age, color, gender, disability, religion, national origin, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or veteran status. Student Health Center services are available to currently enrolled Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology students.

About Us

The Student Health Center is a comprehensive health center. We offer affordable and accessible quality medical and mental care. We house a small pharmacy for prescription and over-the-counter medications, an extensive medical staff with years of expertise, licensed counselors for therapy services, and after-hours therapy services through TimelyCare.

After Hours

If you have an emergency or concern when the Student Health Center is closed, contact the Lamar University Police Department. For emergencies, call 409-880-7777. For non-emergencies, call 409-880-8307. The blue emergency light poles around campus directly contact the LUPD. The Police Station is located between the Mary & John Gray Library, Setzer Center, and Communications Building.

Eligibility

All students at Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology who are enrolled in the current semester are eligible for services, so long as they have paid the student health fee. If you are unsure if you have paid the student health fee, check your tuition statement through your Banner account.

Financial Information

  • Medical: A fee of $10 will be billed to your account for each visit to the Student Health Center for medical appointments. Medications, lab tests, and procedures may incur additional charges which will also be applied to your account, unless you are using Academic Health Plan insurance. It is your responsibility to inquire about charges before accepting services.
  • Counseling: Counseling appointments are always a flat fee of $10.
  • Private Insurance: The Student Health Center does not bill on commercial insurance, except for the Academic Health Plan which is offered to LU and LIT students, and TriCare, a military insurance plan. If you do not have either of these plans, we can provide you with a statement that you can use to file an insurance claim. The statement is available on the Patient Portal. We recommend contacting your insurance company before your visit to make sure we are in network and to verify coverage.
  • No Insurance: We see all eligible Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology students, regardless of insurance coverage. The office visit charge is $10. Labs, medications, procedures, and durable medical equipment such as wraps and crutches are an additional charge. Charges are billed to the student account.

Medications

Medications dispensed from the Student Health Center may be in non-child proof containers. Keep all medication out of the reach of children.

Contact Information

Please provide a current cell phone number, email address, and mailing address each time you are seen at the Student Health Center. If we cannot reach you by phone, we may attempt to reach you through your university email address and/or your postal address with a non-detailed message asking you to contact us.

Privacy Practices

Our privacy policy is posted in the Student Health Center waiting room. Privacy policy brochures are available upon request. Your signature acknowledges that you have read, understand, and accept the privacy practices of Lamar University Student Health Center, which explains when, where, and why confidential health information may be used and shared.

Academic Health Plans - Student Insurance

Student health insurance coverage is recommended for all students, and is required for all international students. Academic Health Plans covers the cost of office visits and lab work at the Student Health Center. The plan does not cover the cost of medications or durable medical goods, like crutches and wraps, prescribed by the providers at the Student Health Center. It is the student's responsibility to inquire about the cost of medications and goods. The portion not covered will be applied to the student account.

If you choose to fill a medical prescription at an outside pharmacy, you should present your insurance card with the prescription. Co-pays vary for each tier of prescription medication at a retail pharmacy.

Visit the Academic Health Plans website for detailed information, applications, and online enrollment.
